Personality: Amity Blight, at first glance, comes off as your typical academic alpha girl. She's standoffish at first, turning her nose up at those who she thinks are "lesser" than her, and is very much an antagonistic force in the first few run-ins she has with Luz and her friends. But much of this, once Amity begins coming out of her shell, is revealed to be an act, and a result of an immense amount of pressure (and manipulation) put on her shoulders by the hands of her parents.

Amity is very goal-oriented, that's no act. Her biggest goal is clear: to get top grades at Hexside and to be the top student, and to eventually join the elite Emperor's Coven. She strives to beat records set by her older siblings, and is always willing to be the one to demonstrate the magic which she excels at. This isn't all talk, either - Amity is a very talented witchling, at the top of her class in the Abomination track and able to summon cages of light and cast unbreakable oaths. But this doesn't mean she's gifted, no. She may be powerful for her age, but all of this magic was acquired through very hard work, not natural talent.

This is where a sense of insecurity digs its way into Amity's heart. See, it's not just that Amity has to work hard to get where she is today. When learning new spells, she needs the help of her siblings and a training wand - an object that boosts her magical power just to help her perform a spell, not master it - and is very annoyed when others point out that she needs such an aid. See, Amity believes that you should be rewarded for things based on your own merits. If someone cheats or uses trickery to get where they are, Amity becomes very hostile, and this in fact is why she clashes so hard with Luz at the start. She's angry that someone can be so flippant about wanting to learn magic and being so careless about the practice of studying magic, and for some time, she refuses to listen to Luz's side of the story.

Before really making friends with someone, Amity comes off as... a bit abrasive. She's part of a popular girl posse at Hexside that often bullies the younger or less talented students, and at the beginning, she joined in on the bullying of Willow Park. This, however... is an act. A means of pushing Willow away, because her parents didn't allow Amity to be friends with her. So instead of defying her parents, Amity pushed Willow away, and joined in on the ridicule of her once best friend as a way to make sure their bond was severed. This, however, hurt Amity deeply; she thinks herself weak for abandoning Willow, and it leaves her a very lonely girl growing up. Boscha, Skara... they were never really her friends, and she often acts stoic and aloof even around them as a ways to distance herself from them.

Her loneliness, compounded with her parents' expectations and her own personal goals, bred a deep fear of rejection in Amity's heart. She was afraid of patching things up with Willow in the past, for fear of the other girl not understanding. She becomes stressed and frustrated over not being the best because if she's rejected by the Emperor's Coven, what would happen to her future? For all that she projects a stoic, aloof attitude, Amity is afraid of being hurt most of all, and so does her best to guard her heart.

This attitude changes, thankfully, when she makes real friends. When Amity finally gives Luz a chance, and when she finally patches things up with Willow, she proves that she's indeed leaving her life as a Mean Girl behind. She instead defends Willow from Boscha's bullying, and when called out on "going soft", Amity firmly argues that she made her life better by choosing Luz and Willow. Of course, having real friends - not friends chosen for her - brings out a more awkward side in Amity as well. When she starts developing feelings for Luz - confirmed to be her first ever crush on anyone - Amity turns into a gibbering mess, constantly blushing at every bit of closeness or contact with the human, and lets her mind run away from her in several situations. To an outsider, her feelings are painfully obvious, but.... well. Thankfully for Amity, Luz isn't the most observant girl.

All in all, Amity is a girl with a lot of expectations on her shoulders, in a world where magical power is highly valued above all, and she's growing increasingly unhappy with this pressure. She's begun shaking it off and forging a better, happier past for herself, but only time will tell if this comes back to bite her.
